Twentynine Palms -- “This is a community event held to get everyone to come out and recognize Earth Day and show them other ways they can be conscious of the Earth,” said Lt. Col Timothy A. Pochop, director of NREA.
NREA co-sponsored the event with LMH to provide a fun and informational experience for all who attended. Combat Center patrons learned about programs and facilities that support the installation’s progressive conservation and energy standards.
“We have different information booths here promoting what’s available to Combat Center patrons on base and in the community to celebrate Earth Day,” said Shanese Campbell, environmental trainer, NREA.
The Combat Center and NREA, who uphold a commitment of being good stewards of the environment, provided representatives from: Hazard Waste Management Branch, Range Sustainment Branch, Water Conservation and Natural and Cultural Resources to provide information on the conservation programs aboard the Combat Center.
Thelma and Louise, who serve as two female desert tortoise Combat Center ambassadors, also made an appearance, allowing families to observe, interact with, and learn about members of the threatened species. The event also featured a miniature carnival ride, giant slide, pony rides and a bounce house for children.
“The goal of the event is for everyone to come together in celebration of Earth Week,” said Monalisaleilani Atuatasi, district manager, LMH. “And I think we did just that and more.”
