Petty Officer 1st Class Peter Hidalgo, a construction mechanic with the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 40 drilling team from Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme, Calif., pours a chemical compound called sodium bentonite into water wells at the Combat Center’s West training area Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008. The Seabees are helping the Public Works Division find hot spots for geothermal energy in the West training area, which can be used to support the base and cut down energy usage. Hidalgo, a San Diego native, is using the chemical compound to help filter out soil and rock particles from the mud so water can be put back into the ground during the drilling process.
