Retired Sgt. Maj. Ray V. Wilburn fired the first shot of the High Desert Shooting Club National Rifle Association High-Power and Long-Range Regional Match at the Combat Center rifle range Nov. 15. Wilburn fired the M1 Garand, the same type of rifle he used during WWII, from the 1000-yard line, but not before giving the competitors of the competition some words of wisdom. “The Marine Corps is known for having the finest shooters,” Wilburn said, before firing. “Have any of you heard of a Warrant Officer Peter Ford? By my knowledge, he was the first Marine to fire a ‘Possible.’ Well, I’m about to shoot the ‘Impossible.’"
