A 3-year-old desert tortoise rests in a visitor's gloved hands Sept. 30, 2015, at the Combat Center's Tortoise Research and Captive Rearing Site. The young tortoise, which is about the size of a deck of cards, is years from being released. Since mid-September, biologists have released 35 tortoises that have lived at the head-start facility since hatching there in 2006. (Official USMC photo by Kelly O'Sullivan/Released)
