Summer ends, school begins aboard Combat Center

Twentynine Palms -- As summer comes to an end, the back-to-school season began aboard the Combat Center at Condor Elementary, Aug. 21, 2017.

The beginning of the school year can be a nerve-wracking time for children and parents alike. Below are a few helpful tips to make transitioning from summer-time to school-time as easy as 1, 2, 3.
Establishing a daily routine can be difficult for both parents and children. One way to ease the wake up process is getting a good nights’ sleep. Scientists recommend at least 10 to 11 hours of sleep for growing children. Turning off electronic devices an hour before bedtime, cutting down on caffeine and exercising regularly are also good techniques to ensure a sufficient amount of sleep.

“Back to school season is always an interesting time, especially for the kindergartners who have never experienced school before,” said Rebeca Battiata, music teacher, Condor Elementary. “The first week is about the teachers getting to know the students and teaching them how to behave in school.”

A balanced breakfast doesn’t have to be an elaborate meal, a bowl of whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk and a piece of fruit is a quick and nutritious breakfast and the best way to start the day.

At times, it can be difficult for children to get used to saying goodbye when starting school. To ease their child’s fears of going to school it is recommended that parents review their child’s daily schedule with them. Parents are also encouraged to get to know their child’s teachers.

Teaching children to obey all traffic signals, signs and traffic officers, whether it’s walking, biking, or riding the bus to school, is a good way to keep them safe on the way to and from school.

Paul Gattuso, Principal of Condor Elementary explained the steps the school is taking to ensure the children have a positive and productive school year.

“This year we have 12 new staff members and 8 new teachers,” Gattuso said. “We try to make the school a place where the students want to be, so each year we offer more to the students making it a place that they look forward to go to.”
