Combat Center helps prepare families with first week of Preparedness Month

Twentynine Palms -- As a part of the Presidential Policy Plan Directive-8: National Preparedness, a directive passed in 2011, the Combat Center has become involved in September’s National Preparedness Month. During the first week of September, G-7, Mission Assurance, has focused on building emergency kits and creating a communication plan.

When it comes to being prepared, having a sound communication plan is a key part of being proactive, and not reactive.

“One of the most important tools that every individual and family can have to protect themselves in possible emergencies is a family emergency preparedness plan that is tailored to their location,” said Michael Quintana, chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear defense protection officer, G-7. “Your plan should address the needs and care of family members with special needs and pets, as well as safely shutting off utilities. Ensure all information is documented so everyone in the family can use it during an emergency.”

Another important part of keeping yourself, your family and your fellow Marines and sailors safe is an emergency kit, which can be used in the event of a natural disaster or any other threat to our Nation. For starters, kits should include items such as: water, enough for one gallon per person per day; food, enough for three days; a first aid kit; personal sanitation supplies; a flashlight and a local map.

“Having a plan is the first step in protecting your family. Don’t assume that someone will be there to help you and your family immediately,” said Quintana. “Remember that you could be on your own for quite a while. As we all know, a disaster can strike at any time and being prepared as much as possible can help families survive when things get difficult.”
